Beautiful Erika was born with pneumonia and multiple health concerns, and battled to restore her health at birth. Erica did make a full recovery, after 5 weeks in the NICU and 6 more months of in-home therapies, and she began not just meeting developmental milestones, but beating them! She could identify numbers at age 15 months…ALL letters by 2 ½ years…She walked early, talked early, and amazed us every day by what she could do!
All appeared well until she entered her preschool years. Erica’s struggles in school persisted. Her biggest concerns were her increasingly challenging behaviors, which seemed to align with ADHD. She was diagnosed with ADHD (and ultimately an Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ultimately qualified for special education services. She was placed in a self-contained classroom for academics. Her behaviors and declining cognitive functioning warranted a change in placement to a self-contained special education school, which is her current academic placement.
Erica has lost most of her cognitive abilities that seemed to flourish in her younger years. Our goal is to help Erica live her life to the fullest with each healthy day she is blessed with. One activity that we feel she could enjoy, alongside us and her brother, is cycling! Because of the diagnosis we were recently given, we are praying that we can find funding assistance sooner, rather than later, as we don’t know just how much time we have left with her.
